Consequent upon the merger of the two ex-states viz. Gangpur and Bonai with Orissa State on 1st January, 1948, a separate district was constituted and named after headquarters town “Sundargarh” of Gangpur Ex-state. The literal meaning of Sundargarh is beautiful fort. The district comprises of three Sub-divisions viz. Sundargarh, Panposh and Bonai. This district also consists of three territorial Forest Divisions namely Sundargarh, Rourkela and Bonai Forest Divisions.
The district of Sundargarh is situated in the North-western portion of Orissa State. It is bounded on the north by State Jharkhand, on the South by 11/22/22 District Jharsuguda, Sambalpur and Deogarh, on the east by District Keonjhar of Orissa and on the west and north-west by district Raigarh of State Chhatisgarh. The district lies between 21035’N and 22032’N Latitude and between 830 32’ E and 850 22’ E Longitude. The total geographical area of the district is 9712 Sq km.
The total forest area of the district is3989.07 Sq km, which is 41.07% of the total geographical area.
